Benefits of ENERGY STAR qualified LED and CFL lamps

Benefits of ENERGY STAR® qualified LED and CFL lamps
There are many, many benefits to switching to Energy Star® qualified CFL or LED lamps. They are good for the environment, using less resources because they are so efficient, and last far longer than older technologies. And it’s not just our environment that benefits; due to their efficiency, they are far and away less costly to operate, saving everyone money on every energy bill we receive.

About Energy Star® Energy Star is a voluntary government-backed program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Energy Star protects the environment by helping us to identify and promote energy-efficient products which reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is the national symbol of energy efficiency.

Energy Star® lamps

• Reduce energy consumption, saving you money. By switching from a 60W incandescent bulb to a 13W CFL, you will save about $62 over the lifetime of the CFL! Replace the incandescent bulb with an LED and you’ll save $143 over the life of the LED bulb!*

• Last longer. A CFL lamp lasts almost 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb, while an LED lamp lasts almost 20 times as long. You save trips to the store which saves time and money.

• Lessen the impact on the environment. Using Energy Star qualified lamps use less energy thus reducing greenhouse gasses and impact on the earth.

• They can be recycled. CFL and LED lamps are recyclable which keeps materials out of landfills.

• Produce less heat. CFL and LED technology uses energy more efficiently, so less heat is emitted. Less heat production means lower cooling bills.

• Save time. Replace lamps less frequently and make less trips to the store.

* Savings based on $0.12 per kWh for 3 hours per day with a 12,000 hour CFL and a 25,000 hour LED. Actual savings will vary depending on current electric rates and actual hours of use

Choosing the right LED or CFL Where to use an Energy Star® LED or CFL

• High use areas kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and outdoor fixtures.

Use in hard to reach fixtures so you don’t have to replace them so frequently.

• Where you need more light without exceeding the maximum rated wattage of the fixture.

Illuminate your stairs and hallways with Step Lights

Step lights are both attractive and functional, as they illuminate stairs, paths, and hallways, in indoor and outdoor applications. Step lights are universally brilliant, but there are so many kinds of step lights, we figured we would help clarify your options in order to help you make an informed decision for your home, garden, or other space.
For our step lights of various brands, visit Electric Supplies Online
1. Light Source
When it comes to step lights, there are several light sources to consider. LED step lights have become a very popular choice. This is largely because LED step lights use small amounts of electricity to provide the perfect amount of light for stairs and hallways at night. They do not give off as much heat as some other sources, have attractive and varied appearances, and can go indoors or outdoors.
While LED is a very popular choice, there are also incandescent, halogen, xenon, and even fluorescent step lights out there. Here’s an infographic you can use to brush up your light bulb identification and selection skills. If you want to see how LED compares to other common light sources, use the infographic as you choose your step lights. Knowing what light source you prefer will make your decision easier.
For Orbit Step Lights, visit Electric Supplies Online
2. Type of Installation
The kind of installation you want to perform will also determine the kind of step lights you buy. If you simply want to retrofit a step light into a hallway power outlet, for example, your choice will be limited to step lights that fit into wall boxes. If you want recessed step lights where there were none before, you can find plenty of lights to fit that bill, indoors or outdoors. If you want outdoor step lights with minimal installation effort, there are battery operated and solar options that are a breeze to install – no wiring required. You can even get creative with LED tape or rope (or tape-rope hybrid!). The important thing is to determine what kind of installations you are able to perform in your space. This will also make your decision making process simpler.
Looking for directional lights too? Click here
3. Size and Shape
Step lights come in lots of shapes and sizes! Many step lights are designed to fit perfectly in a standard power outlet gang box and so are the size of a power outlet cover plate. Retrofit step lights often come with alternate face plates to allow the user to install them either vertically or horizontally, according to the gang box. Another common shape is the brick-sized step light. These are common outdoors but work inside as well. Some other interesting options are small, circular step lights, LED tape or rope (often used to run under railings), and path lights that get staked into the ground. Heck, if you want to get funky with it, you can even use solar LED party torches to illuminate outdoor steps! Now that you have a sense of the various shapes and sizes, think about what might work best for you.
Click here for inground lighting as well.
4. Indoor or Outdoor?
The decision you make about the shape and size of your step lights will likely be related to whether or not you are planning to illuminate steps indoors or outdoors. Outdoor lighting applications open up some exciting possibilities, like using remote controlled path lights to illuminate stairs or running LED tape down the underside of railings. LED tape is especially neat for illuminating outdoor steps, and it comes in a variety of colors. And we’ve already mentioned flickering LED party torches. The cool thing is that many nice-looking step lights are perfect and safe for both indoor and outdoor applications. Don’t limit your search to fixtures that look like they could ONLY be used inside.

5. Louvers or Lenses?
If you are shopping for indoor step lights, you should be prepared to decide between either louvers or lenses to diffuse the light and hide the light source. Choosing between these two is mostly an aesthetic decision related to the over all style of the space you are enhancing. Some people like the way lenses look when the light isn't on. And some people like the way louvers cast unfiltered light. You may want to research step lights with lenses and louvers before shopping because this is a choice you may very well have to make. The good thing is that with high quality step lights, you can’t go wrong with lenses or louvers, as long as they match!

How to Install a Leviton Light Switch

How to Install a Leviton Light Switch

In this blog post, we'll be showing you how to quickwire a single-pole switch for easy installation.
Single pole light switches are the most common switches found in homes. A single pole switch controls a light or lights from one location. Single pole switches have two screw terminals, and some single pole switches also come with a green screw for the ground wire. Leviton offers Decora style and traditional toggle style single pole switches.

Looking for Levtion wallplates too? Click here
Steps
Warning: To avoid fire, shock, or death, turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that the power is off, using a voltage tester, before wiring!
1) Remove the wall plate using a flat head screwdriver, then remove the old light switch from the wall box.
2) There should be three wires coming out of the wall box. Using your pliers, make a "shephard's hook" at the end of each wire.
3) Take the bare copper or green wire (ground wire) and connect it to the green screw (ground screw) on the side of the switch. Make sure the hook goes on clockwise. This will help tighten the wire in the next step.
Connect ground wire to the ground screw
4) Using your phillips screwdriver, tighten the ground screw onto the wire.
5) Now you can connect the two remaining wires to the two remaining screws on your light switch (either wire to either screw). Again, ensure the hooks are connected clockwise and tighten the screws with your screwdriver.
Connect the two wires to the two remaining screws on your light switch
6) Before placing the switch back into the wall box, take a peice of electrical tape and tape over the terminal screws. This will prevent any unwanted contact between the screws and the side of the wall box.
7) Using your phillips screwdriver, mount the light switch back onto the wall box using the screws provided. If you are installing a toggle switch, make sure the ON/OFF writing is the right way up(to save confusion later!).
Mount the light switch back onto the wallbox
8) Fasten the wall plate on top of the switch with your flat head screwdriver. Tip: leave the slots in the wall plate screws vertical to prevent dust collecting in the screws.
Fasten the wall plate on top of the switch
9) Now you're ready to turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and test your work!
