Tips for Installing a Ventilation Fan

Our AirZone Ventilation Fans are on sale!! Click here for more details.

Step 1: Select the proper size fan: Multiply the length, width, and height of the room to determine the cubic volume of the space. Divide the cubic volume by 7.5 This is the CFM capacity of the fan required. Large bathrooms may require 2 fans.

Check the dimensions of the fan and verify it will fit in the space selected.

After measuring the room dimensions, multiply the room height, width, and length to determine the volume of the room in cubic feet.

Step 2: Select the fan location: Placing the fan near the source of moisture or odor is ideal. If you are placing the fan close to the shower, please use a GFCI circuit breaker on the fan circuit for added safety.

Step 3: Mounting the fan housing: The fan housing can be mounted using adjustable bar hangers or the integral quick mount bracket.

For adjustable bar hangers
Mark location on Joist.
Pre-drill joist at marked locations.
Install screws.
Add second screw.
Place key-hole slot over screw head and tighten.

For integral quick mount bracket:
Insert bar hangers into housing.
Install fan level with the bottom of the joist.
Attach bar-hangers to joist using screws.

Step 4: Attach Duct Adaptor: Install the duct adaptor on to the fan by snapping it into place.

Step 5: Attach Duct Work : Slip the duct over the duct adaptor. Larger diameter duct will allow the fan to operate more efficiently. Check local codes for sizing requirements.

After the duct is secured to the duct adaptor using a hose clamp. Seal the connection using duct tape.

Install the grill temporarily to verify fit and orientation. Remove prior to installing and finishing ceiling.

Step 6: Connect Power: Supply fan with power using branch circuit wiring. Check local codes prior to installation.

Use wire nuts for proper terminations.

Install grill only after the ceiling has been installed and painted.
